Kyoto Cherry Blossom Forecast Calendar: Best Spots & Travel Tips (Updated Yearly)

Kyoto’s cherry blossoms usually peak in early April, and 2026 looks right on schedule! If you’re planning a spring trip, this is when the first Somei Yoshino trees start blooming, with later varieties carrying the season into mid-April.

Just keep in mind that bloom timing can shift a little depending on the weather. I recommend bookmarking this page and checking back in March so you can catch Kyoto at its best.

Best Places to See Cherry Blossoms in Kyoto

Kyoto has cherry blossom spots spread across the city, from the central area to quieter districts and nearby towns. To help you plan your route and save time, the list below starts from central Kyoto, making it easier to combine nearby locations. Enjoy!

1. Kyoto Gyoen National Garden

Kyoto Imperial Palace stands within the sprawling Kyoto Gyoen National Garden. It is a wide, open green space in the heart of the city. Cherry trees are scattered throughout the park, so it never feels crowded even during peak season.

Locals come here for walks, picnics, and cycling under the blossoms. Its central location makes it an easy stop between sightseeing spots.

2. Kamogawa River 

The Kamogawa River flows through the heart of Kyoto and becomes especially scenic in early April when cherry trees bloom along both banks. The wide river paths are ideal for walking or cycling. Locals gather here to relax, picnic, or enjoy the blossoms at a slower pace. 

The Starbucks near Sanjo Bridge is especially popular with views of the Kamogawa River.

Maruyama Park is Kyoto’s oldest park and a favorite spot for hanami (picnicking under blooming cherry trees). The star of the park is an old weeping cherry tree, which looks magical when lit up at night.

5. Kiyomizu-dera Temple 

Kiyomizu-dera is one of Kyoto’s most famous temples, with a wooden terrace that gives amazing views of the city. Early April is the perfect time to see the cherry blossoms here.

From March 27 to April 5, 2026, the temple stays open until 9:30 p.m. (last entry 9:00 p.m.) for special night illuminations, where the Kannon’s blue light brightens the night sky. 

6. Nanzen-ji Temple 

Nanzen-ji is a large temple complex with wide grounds, stone paths, and peaceful gardens. Cherry trees bloom around the temple gates and along the canal paths.

The famous brick aqueduct is a highlight and looks especially beautiful framed by blossoms. It is a great place to escape crowds and enjoy a quiet, reflective atmosphere.

7. Philosopher’s Path 

The Philosopher’s Path, or Tetsugaku no Michi, is a calm and peaceful walkway in Kyoto’s Higashiyama area. It runs along a small canal lined with cherry and maple trees and passes temples like Ginkaku-ji, Nanzen-ji, and Honen-in.

Named after the philosopher Nishida Kitaro, who walked here daily to reflect, it’s perfect for a slow stroll, enjoying cherry blossoms, visiting small temples, and stopping at cozy cafes along the way.

8. Around Ginkaku-ji Temple (Silver Pavilion)

Arashiyama is a lovely part of western Kyoto, especially beautiful in early April when the cherry blossoms bloom. The Togetsukyo Bridge is a famous landmark here, with cherry trees along the riverside and mountains as a backdrop.

Take a stroll through the bamboo groves, hop on a boat for a river ride, or visit nearby temples like Tenryuji. Don’t miss Okochi Sanso Villa for peaceful gardens and matcha tea, or Monkey Park Iwatayama (highly recommended!) for playful monkeys and panoramic view of Kyoto.

Renting a bike is a fun way to explore the quieter Sagano area north of the bridge, away from the crowds.

10. Byodo-in Temple in Uji 

Uji is a peaceful town south of Kyoto, known for matcha and Byodo-in Temple. The area feels more relaxed than Kyoto city, even during peak blossom season. Byodo-in’s Phoenix Hall, with cherry blossoms and water views, is one of the most photogenic scenes in the region. Uji Botanical Garden is also worth visiting, with blooms expected around April 15.
