This fantastic, jet-black jam is made from the special Tanba Black variety of black soybeans, or kuromame.
Tanba Black is an extra large variety of black soybean that has been grown in the Tanba region of Kyoto since ancient times. It is known for its pitch-black color, chewy texture and especially delicious taste.
This product is a jam made with boiled black soybeans, twice-roasted black sesame seeds and honey. It has a deliciously sweet, toasty flavor and is ideal not only for spreading on toast, but for serving with Japanese mochi rice cakes, or even dissolving in milk for a tasty sweet drink.

I will absolutely buy this again. I only wish the jars were larger, but I’m glad that I ordered two the first time. I don’t eat that many sweets, so for me this sweetness is perfect - present but not overpowering or sugary at all.
I taste the sesame more than the soybean, perhaps, as the flavour reminds me a little of sesame mochi…I make barley+rice (50/50), then a little of this on top. I stir it through, then add a little sesame-kinako powder and black roasted sesame seeds.

The combined sweetness of the Tanba Black Kuromame and black sesame is very pastry-like. The texture is extremely sticky and thick. The subtle umami and nuttiness contrasts well without being overpresent. I enjoy this on my morning sprouted grain toast as a replacement to nut butters (it feels more dessert-like, but also very healthy)!
